One of the things about a food forest is the growth of trees and plants that are not actually planted. We have such plants in our food forest. One of the best is an apple tree that grew next to a Bramley seedling tree. It is nothing like its neighbour except that it is a good cooker, but it is almost cylindrical in shape, tastes just as good as an eating apple as a cooking apple.
Apple crumble is a kiwi favourite. Everybody has a feijoa tree or two but putting them together raises both to a new level. This is an English recipe for Raspberry crumble adapted to what we are currently picking, hence the units.
Instructions
- Make the crumble by rubbing the butter into the flour, sugar, spice
- Peel and slice the apples
- Using a teaspoon remove the feijoa from the skin and chop roughly
- Put the fruit in an ovenproof dish, and cover wtih the crumble mix
- Bake at about 200 deg C for about 30 minutes
- Cool a little before serving wtih ice cream, cream, yoghurt or milk
